When building a following from the ground up, the art of self-promotion is key. It's not a time to be shy - you need to spread the word far and wide to find those who want to read your content.

This will take time, but here's few tips to help you on your way to your first 100 subscribers.

1. Update your email signature

Think about how many emails you send each day. How many of those are to people who might be interested in your content? How many of those people would be willing to help you promote it?

The simplest thing you can do - that can also result in a big impact - is add a link to your Publication page to your email signature. It's a gentle reminder to the people in your address book of what you're up to - and that reach goes even further if your emails get forwarded.

2. Connect your social channels

Maintaining a regular Social Media presence is a must if you plan to seriously build out your following. It's a free outlet for your content and an easy way to directly reach people with an interest in your subject matter (see our guide to social media).

Choosing which Social Media networks to use will depend on your publication. Whichever networks you choose, it's good practice to promote them on your publication page and your email signature.

And remember that with Scriber, you can connect your social channels to your Publication page. To connect your social channels, go to your account Settings.

3. Optimise your meta tags

You have to make it as easy as possible for search engines to not only find your content, but also understand what it's about, so that it can match your page to potential searchers.

In the Publication setup process, Scriber allows you to set your meta tags - short snippets of text on every web page that tells search engines about your page content - to help boost your visibility. These tags include:

SEO is an artform in itself and takes years to master. Fortunately, there many great guides out there on writing effective Meta Tags. It's worth reading a few of them to give you some pointers on how to make the most out of yours.
