But, if you're just starting your content publishing journey from scratch, Social Media can be one of the most effective tools to grow a following.

With over 15 Social Media platforms to choose from (and counting), it can all be a bit overwhelming. In the Finance world, Twitter and LinkedIn are generally recognised as king - but that's not to say there's no value in exploring other options. To help you on your way, here's our short guide to using Social Media to grow your following.

Key considerations before you get started

Before you delve into the world of Social Media, its good to do some research to help you figure out where you need to be, and what your content might look like.

1. Find out where your audience is

This may sound obvious, but it's vital that you do your research to find out what platforms your potential readers - and competitors - are using. Fortunately, all Social Media platforms have search functions to help you find exactly that. Search for your topic, see who and how many people are talking about it, and identify those who already have cultivated that audience.

On LinkedIn (and Facebook), you can also search for groups that are relevant to your publication. Join them and engage in discussion with its members - you may find that your first subscribers come from direct engagements such as this.

On Twitter, use the search function to identify relevant hashtags in your area of expertise and find pre-built lists of accounts that might be interested in what you're writing about.

2. Think about what you would post
